According to a Bloomberg report, Apple has been in talks with Google about licensing Gemini capabilities for the iPhone 16, which will be powered by iOS 18. Meanwhile, Apple’s own AI models (currently under development) would focus on enabling features that operate on-device.
The move comes apparently in response to the competitive landscape of integrating AI features on smartphones. Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro already feature an integrated AI system, and the new Galaxy S24 family works with Galaxy AI, supported by Google’s AI models, including Gemini Pro.
Galaxy AI offers features such as gesture-based image search, article summarization, real-time call translation, and chat assistance. And Apple seems to be taking the same route and not falling behind by improving Siri’s capabilities and upgrading its mic for a more intuitive voice assistant experience.
However, it’s important to note that the discussion between Apple and Google is still in progress. We’ll have to wait for an official announcement and see how Apple differentiates its technology from other smartphones.
